Historian Harvey J. Kaye is the Ben & Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Democracy and Justice Studies at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
Professor Kaye is the author of many books including The American Radical, Are We Good Citizens?; Thomas Paine and the Promise of America; and The Fight For The Four Freedoms: What Made FDR And The Greatest Generation Truly Great.
Professor Kaye explains how the Democratic Party must embrace the progressive vision and legacy of presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson if they are to defeat Donald Trump and create a more democratic, free, and just American society with opportunities for all people on both sides of the color line and not the rich.
He also highlights how the best of American democracy is a radical project and the ways which that legacy must be embraced, renewed, and then applied to create a better society.
And Professor Kaye warns that the Democratic Party faces an existential crisis where it may fracture and fall apart if it fails to nominate a true progressive such as Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in 2020.
